While my friend and their family performed their evening prayers at the mosque not too far from home, I decided to do them a favour by doing a spot of ironing. Sightings of the Kuntilanak are reported to be prominent in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.ĭusk had fallen on my third night in Borneo. She usually resides within banana trees during the day. Her presence is marked by the sound of crying children and the strong smell of frangipani, followed by a foul stench, synonymous with rotting flesh and decomposition - by which time it would be too late to run. Grieving, she takes revenge on men - to whom she appears as a beautiful, young lady - and on women in labour, as well as their newborn children. The vengeful vampiric female spirit is believed to occur as a result of botched childbirth, which results in the death of the mother, and sometimes the child. If I was ever asked to name the scariest creature in my region, the Kuntilanak would be my immediate answer. I had always brushed them off as low-effort attempts by adults to keep the kids in line, but a part of me had always wondered if they had some element of truth in them.
